Protagonist and stock characters

PROTAGONIST

Features of her identity consist of a troubled background where she relies on suicide sister as a guide for moral support; she suffers from a mental illness which leaves her suspicious about individual actions. She differs from the majority of teenagers and is often referred to as an outcast of mainstream society, adhering to the emo subculture. She is going to challenge the ideal conventions conveyed in Horror genre as we are not going to disguise her identity through a mask or deformed facial features, the isolation from society will be conveyed through her personality, yet we are keeping the killer and reasons behind this open which opens enigma. We are going to repeat the convention of troubled background which relates to the reason of killing, this will be approached through the needed guidance of moral support from her sister who she has lost, linked with troubled family issues that define her and her sister as outcasts. Our protagonist will vary the convention of male dominance, we are portraying issues/ stereotypes of modern society, rejecting traditional hegemonic views, we will use a female as the killer, showing a crisis in masculinity and perhaps an underlying concept of anyone becoming a killer. This varies from Halloween, Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm St but relates to our theme showing ambition and that anything can happen.

STOCK CHARACTERS

The final girl
The final girl is the sole surviving member of the group of teenagers who are killed by the maniacal killer. Portrayed as vulnerable, pretty and kind. She is a genuine character who draws in the audience and allows verstehan of the audience being able to imagine themself in her shoes. She feels guilty after cheating through pressure.  She adheres to the ironic Final Girl in Horror genre as she is the survivor, however we challenge this stereotype as she does not hold a hate against women, or try to collect them, she was simply pressured into cheating and feels guilty because of the consequent this had ended in.

      Suicide girl - Kate
Kate is the main stock character. She is a hard worker, with high ambitions but never seems to succeed; this is where our theme opens up of ambition vs. disaffection and success vs. failure. This character will also open up our emotional hook of fear of failure, revenge and deceit. She tends to be like her sister, an outcast in mainstream society and bullied because of this, this also relates to having a troubled background and parenting issues which has been portrayed as a theme of horror through fear of teenagers. She does not conform to ‘the perfect girl’ as although she is an outcast, pro-dominantly hated she challenges the stuck up, extremely two-faced stereotype. She portrays a fear of isolation, which has also been a reoccurring theme through horror, her disconnection with the rest of teenagers in her age group leads to suicide, may of been prevented if she wasn’t alone.

     The Lad – Harry
Harry will be a trendy lad conveying modern stereotypes of today’s society; this will adhere to our target audience. He is confident because of his looks and outgoing personality, adhering to 'the jock' - a well established stock character in slasher horror genre. The Jock in horror usually has a slim chance of survival, we have decided to repeat this convention as Harry does not survive the test which determines life, which leads to a scene of death.
